Henry Sinclair Horne, Baron Horne (1861-1929), General
Sitter in 15 portraits
Horne joined the Army in 1880 and served in the 1899 Boer War. With the outbreak of war in 1914, he was placed in command of an artillery brigade and despatched to France. In 1915 he was posted to Egypt and the Suez Canal, where he reported upon British defences. Horne was back in France in 1916, this time in charge of XV Corps, where he played a prominent role in the Battle of the Somme in July 1916. He demonstrated an ongoing enthusiasm for the development of technical and tactical improvements within artillery. In September 1916, he was placed in command of the First Army, which he retained until the armistice. Horne was the only artillery officer of the war to be given command of a British field army.
