Thomas Hughes

(1822-1896), Social reformer and children's writer

Sitter in 16 portraits
Author; barrister, 1848; follower of F.D. Maurice and the Christian Socialist movement; his famous book, Tom Brown's Schooldays, was published anonymously in 1857, and was immediately successful; Liberal MP, 1865 and 1868-74; Principal of Working Men's College, 1872-83; county court judge, 1882-96; published biographies and other works.
