Jerome Klapka Jerome (1859-1927), Novelist and playwright
Sitter in 31 portraits
Novelist and playwright; Jerome left school at fourteen and initially worked as a clerk for a railway company, and then as an actor. He gave up the stage in favour of writing and journalism, publishing his first book On the Stage - and Off in 1885. His most famous book Three Men in a Boat, 1889, has remained a popular classic, and has been filmed three times. He wrote several plays and worked as an editor on The Idler and To-Day magazines. Jerome served as an ambulance driver in the French army during the First World War (he was too old for the British Army), and he wrote his autobiography My Life and Times in 1926.
