Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener of Khartoum (1850-1916), Field Marshal

Re-conquered the Sudan, victor of the Battle of Omdurman (1898-9) and then became Chief-of-Staff to Lord Roberts during the Boer War. Commander-in-Chief in India (1902-9) and Secretary of State for War during the First World War. Foresaw a long war and dramatically increased size of British army with programmes of recruitment including the poster 'Your Country Needs You'; mistrusted by Cabinet colleagues, his power was restricted; drowned en route for Russia when HMS Hampshire struck a mine.
