George William Kitchin (1827-1912), Dean of Winchester

Kitchin was a Student (Fellow) of Christ Church, Oxford, in 1846, took a Double First - in Classics and Mathematics - in 1850, and was an Examiner in Mathematics in 1854. He left to become Headmaster of Twyford Preparatory School, Hampshire but returned to residence as Censor in 1861. He married in 1863 and was Oxford's first Censor of non-collegiate students from 1868 to 1883 when he became Dean of Winchester. He became Dean of Durham in 1894 and Chancellor of Durham University in 1908.
