John Lake
(1624-1689), Bishop of ChichesterLater Stuart Portraits Catalogue Entry
Sitter in 13 portraits
Lake was appointed Bishop of Sodor and Man in 1682 and progressed swiftly to the Bishoprics of Bristol and then Chichester. In 1688 he was one of the seven bishops who signed a petition to King James II asking him to reconsider his Declaration of Indulgence, a policy of religious tolerance towards Catholics. All seven were subsequently sent to the Tower. On the succession of William and Mary the following year, Lake was one of the bishops who believed that, because of the sacred nature of the oath they had made to James II, they could not take the oaths of allegiance to the new Monarchs. However, he died before he was called upon to take the oath.
