George Henry Lewes
(1817-1878), WriterSitter in 9 portraits
Lewes, a critic for many of the leading periodicals and briefly editor of the Fortnightly Review, also wrote works on philosophical problems as well as an acclaimed Life of Goethe. In 1854 Lewes formed a lifelong relationship with the novelist George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans), but was unable to obtain a divorce.
