Sir George Henry Lewis, 1st Bt
(1833-1911), SolicitorSitter in 12 portraits
Educated at University College, London. In 1850 he was articled to his father, James Graham Lewis of Lewis & Lewis, one of the best-known firms of solicitors in London. George was admitted as a solicitor in 1856 and was later made partner. He drew public attention to himself by his interrogation in the Charles Bravo poisoning case in 1876, and from that time was connected with many controversial criminal cases. He became the solicitor of choice for many in society as his advice and mediation helped most of his clients avoid notoriety. For example, in 1893 Oscar Wilde engaged him to represent Lord Alfred Douglas; he paid a blackmailer to recover an incriminating letter thus avoiding a scandal.
