The full name of the sitter, "M. L'Instant," is Jean-Baptiste Symphor Linstant de Pradine, then a law student in Paris, later chargé d'affaires d'Haïti to Paris and London (1857), and author of the 7-volume Recueil général des lois et actes du gouvermement d’Haïti, 1804-1843.
