Welbore Ellis, 1st Baron Mendip

(1713-1802), Politician; MP for Weymouth and Melcombe Regis and Secretary of State for the Colonies

Mid-Georgian Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 3 portraits
Baron Mendip was a Member of Parliament for fifty-two years. He was a conservative figure, opposed to parliamentary reform and hostile to the demands of the American colonists. In 1782, he served in the final month of Lord North's ministry as Secretary of State for America but by this time the American War of Independence had been lost. History has not been generous to Mendip; the Earl of Stanhope described him as 'ridiculed for his diminutive stature, not redeemed by any loftiness of mind'.
