Thomas Sturge Moore
(1870-1944), Poet and wood-engraverSitter in 6 portraits
Like lithography, chalk enabled Shannon to demonstrate his exceptional talent as a draughtsman. These drawings depict members of Ricketts and Shannon's circle. The writer and designer Sturge Moore was a talented disciple of the pair. He contributed to The Dial and helped edit and translate a number of books for the Vale Press. His play Astarte (1906) introduced Ricketts to a successful career in theatrical design. He later wrote a biography, Charles Ricketts R.A. (1933), and published Ricketts's collected letters (1939). Thomas Sturge Moore also appears in the illustration to Daphnis and Chloe in the next case.
