Artist; born and trained in Edinburgh; settled in London, 1862, where he enjoyed a highly successful career as a painter of subject pictures and portraits; elected RA, 1877. Orchardson became best known for depictions of the history and manners of the eighteenth century and Regency periods and for his dramatic interpretations of the anxieties of contemporary upper class life.
