Sir Bernard Partridge began his career working in an architect's office and then for a firm of stained-glass designers. He acted in several plays and for a time he could not decide between the theatre and art as a career. Partridge was first invited to contribute to Punch in 1891, and the following year he was asked to become a staff cartoonist. In 1901 he replaced John Tenniel as the magazine's chief cartoonist, a post he held until his death. Partridge was knighted by Stanley Baldwin, the Conservative prime minister, in 1925 and the following year he loyally supported the government during the General Strike.
