Born in Dorset in 1864 and educated at Eton College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst; served in India and Burma before returning to England in 1889; in 1893 Rawlinson entered the Staff College, Camberley; he took up staff appointments during the South African War; at the outbreak of the First World War he took command of the British IV Corps and, in 1915, was elevated to command of the British First Army; he was taken off the front after questioning higher ranks about the tactics being used; he was later involved in the 1918 battle at Amiens, described as the British army's most distinguished operation of the war; Rawlinson was made Commander-in-Chief of the Army in India from 1920 to 1925.
