Bristol-born poet and painter, studied at the Slade (1911-13), with Mark Gertler and David Bomberg. Two collections of poems, Night and Day (1912) and Youth (1915) were privately published before he enlisted in 1915. Some of his best poems such as 'Break of Day in the Trenches' and 'Louse Hunting' were written on the Western Front, where he was killed in April 1918.
