James Sant was a painter specialising in portraits. Between 1840 and 1904 Sant exhibited around 250 paintings at the Royal Academy. He was elected to the RA in 1870, and in 1872 was appointed Principal Painter in Ordinary (official portraitist) to Queen Victoria and the royal family.
