Edward Shortt
(1862-1935), Home SecretarySitter in 5 portraits
Edward Shortt was a politician who served as a member of David Lloyd George's cabinet. In 1890, Shortt was called to the Bar by the Middle Temple, of which he was elected a bencher in 1919, and joined the north eastern circuit. He entered Parliament as a Liberal MP in 1910. In 1918, he was appointed Chief Secretary for Ireland, and a year later was transferred as Home Secretary to the Home Office, in the midst of a threatened police strike. He helped to solve the strike to everyone's satisfaction and earned the support of the police. Shortt lost his seat in 1922 and did not stand for Parliament again.
