Sir (Francis) Osbert Sacheverell Sitwell, 5th Bt (1892-1969), Writer
Sitter in 59 portraits
He joined the army in 1911 and served throughout the First World War. His early poetry, such as The Winstonburg Line (1919), is pacifist in tone. He was a staunch supporter of the avant-garde poetry of Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot, and was a patron of the young William Walton, for whose Belshazzar's Feast he wrote the libretto in 1926. His travel writing includes Winters of Discontent(1932), about Italy, and Escape with me! (1939) on China and the Far East. His five-volume autobiography Left-Hand, Right Hand (1944-50) is considered his masterpiece.
