Politician; agent of the Long Parliament to the United Provinces, 1642-50, accompanied Oliver St. John to Holland to negotiate alliance, 1651; despite the failure of the mission he afterwards played a more prominent role in Commonwealth affairs; granted a pardon at the Restoration.
