Francis Turner

(1638?-1700), Bishop of Ely

Later Stuart Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 14 portraits
Appointed Bishop of Rochester in 1683, Turner was transferred to Ely the following year. Although an ally of King James II, Turner disapproved of the King's pro-Catholic stance. In 1688 he was one of seven Bishops who signed a petition to James asking to reconsider his Declaration of Indulgence, which granted freedom of worship to Catholics. All seven were briefly sent to the Tower. In the convention of 1689 that met to settle the constitution following James's flight, Turner strongly opposed William of Orange's assumption of the throne. He refused to swear allegiance to William and Mary and was deprived of his office in 1690.
