Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852), Field Marshal and Prime Minister

Sitter associated with 340 portraits
A soldier and statesman, Wellington's early victories were in India and the Spanish Peninsula. In 1815, he was hailed as the man who finally achieved the peace of nations when he led the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. He later entered Parliament, where he was a bastion of ultra-Tory values against the forces of liberal change. He was Prime Minister between 1828 and 1830 and again in 1834.
