David Welsh
(1793-1845), Scottish divine and writerSitter in 4 portraits
Welsh was ordained into the Church of Scotland in 1821 and in 1831 he was appointed Professor of Church History in the University of Edinburgh. He was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland on the occasion of the Disruption of 1843, and headed the secession on the day of the exodus. He also chaired the first General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland.
