John Fane, 10th Earl of Westmorland

(1759-1841), Politician; Lord Privy Seal

Regency Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter associated with 32 portraits
Previously styled Lord Burghersh, Fane succeeded to the earldom in 1774. In 1782, he eloped with Sarah Anne Child, the only child and heir of banker Robert Child. The two were married at Gretna Green and Child consequently cut his daughter out of his will. While at Cambridge Westmorland had formed a friendship with William Pitt, which was later resumed in parliament. Pitt made him Joint Postmaster-General in 1789; the following year he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, a post he held for four years. Westmoreland became Lord Privy Seal with a Cabinet seat in 1798 and remained in office for nearly thirty years.
