Sir William Young, 2nd Bt
(1749-1815), Governor of Tobago and politician; MPSitter associated with 2 portraits
At the death of his father in 1788 Young inherited four sugar plantations in the Caribbean and the ownership of 896 African slaves. By 1791 he had embarked on a voyage to these properties that he later wrote about in A Tour through the Several Islands of Barbados, St Vincent, Tobago, and Grenada. When he returned to Britain, he joined parliament becoming a vocal opponent to the abolition of slavery.
