Actor, director, producer Richard Attenborough made his film debut in In Which We Serve (1942) and played leading roles and character parts throughout the next two decades in films such as Brighton Rock (1947). In 1959 he also turned to producing forming a partnership with Bryan Forbes. In 1969 he directed his first film, Oh What a Lovely War!. Gandhi (1982) was his greatest success for which he received Academy Awards for Best Film and Best Director. Knighted in 1976 and created a Life Peer in 1993.
