Master of Birkbeck College (1987-97) and Labour spokesperson on education in the House of Lords; Professor of Educational Administration at the Institute of Education 1978-83; Director of Education at ILEA 1983-7; Chairman of the BBC's General Advisory Council 1987-91; created Baroness 1987; her books include Inside the Think Tank...1971-83 and Prisons and Penal Reform (1990).
