British, London-born heavyweight boxer of Jamaican and Dominican descent. He started boxing when he was nine years old at Wandsworth Boys Club in London, he began his professional boxing career in 1982. He went onto win twenty-one consecutive fights through knockout, becoming well known for his punching prowess. During his career he made unsuccessful bids for the world title against Tim Witherspoon (1986), Mike Tyson (1989) and Lennox Lewis (1993) before taking the WBC title on a unanimous point's decision over Oliver McCall at Wembley on 2 September 1995. He was awarded an MBE in 1990. In 2003 he was diagnosed as having Bipolar disorder and helped to raise awareness of the stigma attached to mental health. He remains one of Britain's best-loved sports personalities.
