Conservative politician who held high office in the 1950s and early 1960s. Minister of Education (1941-5); Chancellor of the Exchequer (1951-5); Home Secretary (1957-62); Foreign Secretary (1963-4). His principal achievement is seen as the 1944 Education Act, the 'Butler Act' which set the pattern for free secondary education for the next twenty years.
