During the First World War she worked with the Voluntary Aid Detachment and qualified as a dispenser. Christie's first novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles, which introduced Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, was published by Bodley Head in 1920. Following the divorce from her first husband, Archibald Christie, she introduced the character Miss Jane Marple in The Murder at the Vicarage (1930). She accompanied her archaeologist husband Max Mallowan on expeditions, which inspired books such as Murder on the Orient Express (1934) and Death on the Nile (1937).
