Richard Thomas Church
(1893-1972), Poet, critic and novelistSitter in 20 portraits
Poet, literary critic and novelist. Throughout his career as a civil servant and later as a professional journalist, Church devoted himself to writing poetry and prose. His literary strength was poetry, in which he came to prominence in 1926 with Portrait of the Abbot. In 1948 a large volume of his Collected Poems was published. His most successful prose achievements were his autobiographical volumes, Over the Bridge (1955), The Golden Sovereign (1957) and The Voyage Home (1964), the first of which won The Sunday Times Prize for Literature. Amongst his diverse works are his novels, his essays on country themes, and his verse plays.
