Nevill Coghill

(1899-1980), Scholar, university teacher, writer and theatre producer

Sitter in 10 portraits
Scholar and teacher of Middle English at Oxford, he reached a huge audience with his modern translation of Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, broadcast shortly after the War on BBC radio and published in 1951 by Penguin. In 1957 he was elected Professor of English Literature at Oxford. He was also a celebrated Oxford theatrical director and in 1966 directed his ex-pupil Richard Burton, and Elizabeth Taylor, in Dr Faustus.
