Joseph Cottle

(1770-1853), Author and bookseller

Sitter in 1 portrait
Bristol-born Joseph Cottle is best known as the publisher of Lyrical Ballads in 1798. He was the first to publish the work of Wordsworth and Coleridge, Southey and Charles Lamb. He produced an edition of Thomas Chatterton's poems and wrote verse epics of his own. His controversial Recollections of Coleridge were notorious for publicising the poet's opium addiction. Cottle's life and correspondence included contact with notables of the period, including Wesley, Hannah More, the 'milk-maid poet' Ann Yearsley, Humphry Davy, de Quincey, Byron, Mary Russell Mitford and many others.
