Jelly D'Aranyi

(1893-1966), Violinist

Sitter in 1 portrait
Jelly and her sister Adila were the daughters of the chief of police in Budapest and the great-nieces of the violinist Josef Joachim. After concert tours of America and Europe, from 1914 she lived mainly in Britain. Her performances of classical, romantic and modern music were celebrated, and composers including Béla Bartók, Maurice Ravel and Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote works for her. She performed with Bartók in London and gave the London premiere of Schumann's violin concerto.
