Sir Robin Day

(1923-2000), Television and radio journalist

Sitter in 6 portraits
Broadcaster and journalist. Day was President of the Union at Oxford in 1950, and trained for the bar. He then embarked on a career in television journalism with ITN and later the BBC. He stood unsuccessfully for Parliament as a Liberal in 1959. As a political commentator, however, Day rose rapidly to the top of his profession. An influential figure in the early days of broadcasting particularly in establishing television current affairs programmes such as Panorama, he developed a tough interviewing style which has been adopted by others. A pocket cartoon by Marc showing Day has Day ready to pounce under the caption 'One last insult, Prime Minister'.
