Sir Harold Matthew Evans

Sitter in 4 portraits
Evans began his career at the age of sixteen as a reporter for a weekly newspaper in Ashton-Under-Lyne. He was then editor of The Northern Echo, before spending fourteen years as editor of the Sunday Times (1967-81). Evans became a pioneer of investigative journalism and was responsible for the paper's crusading style of reporting, which brought to public attention many stories and scandals that were officially denied or ignored. In 1984, he moved to the United States, where he taught at Duke University. He was subsequently appointed editor-in-chief of The Atlantic Monthly Press, and became editorial director of US News & World Report. He also wrote a number of books on history and journalism.
