Artist and leading stage designer, Hurry was commissioned by Robert Helpmann to design sets for the ballet Hamlet (1941) and subsequently worked for Sadler's Wells, the Old Vic, Glyndebourne, Covent Garden and the Royal Shakespeare Company (1940-60). Much of his later work was for the Canadian theatre, particularly in Stratford, Ontario.
