Born William Henry Pratt in Dulwich, South London. A long career in silent films preceded his first appearance as the monster in Frankenstein in 1931. Subsequently he became the acknowledged king of Hollywood horror, bringing style and pathos to many freaks and villains for nearly 40 years.
