Armenian-born, Canadian photographer. Apprenticed to the Boston photographer John H. Garo before taking a studio in Ottawa, 1932. He was commissioned to do official Canadian Government portraits from 1935. His photograph of Winston Churchill was published on the cover of Life magazine in 1942, with important commissions for Life magazine following from 1944 onwards. Faces of Destiny was published 1946/7; Portraits of Greatness published with an exhibition organised by National Gallery of Canada, 1959/60; Karsh, A Fifty-Year Retrospective was published in 1983 with exhibitions in New York, Bradford and National Portrait Gallery.
