Lydia Lopokova

(1892-1981), Ballet dancer; wife of Baron Keynes

Lydia Lopokova (Lady Keynes)

Sitter in 22 portraits
Russian ballerina Lopokova joined the Ballets Russes in 1910 but it was not until 1918 that she was first seen in London when she appeared as a principal dancer alongside Massine at the Coliseum. Principally a demi-caractère dancer, she was acclaimed for the roles created for her by Massine in The Good-Humoured Ladies (1917) and La Boutique Fantasque (1919). She returned to London with Diaghilev's company in 1921, appearing as Aurora in The Sleeping Princess. She married the economist John Maynard Keynes in 1925. In the early 1930s she lent her support to Ninette de Valois's newly formed Vic-Wells Ballet company.
