Lansbury was born in London to the actress Moyna Macgill and politician Edgar Lansbury and moved to America to escape the Blitz during the Second World War. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in the film Gaslight (1944). Other screen roles included Raymond's mother in The Manchurian Candidate (1962) and an amateur witch in Bedknobs and Broomsticks, but she was best known internationally for her starring role as the sleuth Jessica Fletcher in the long-running American television series Murder, She Wrote (1984-1996).
