(1895-1978), Teacher, editor and literary critic

Literary critic, editor and teacher; F.R. Leavis studied English at Emmanuel College, Cambridge and later became a fellow of Downing College; his influential works of criticism include Revaluation (1936) and The Great Tradition (1948). With his wife, Q.D. Leavis, he helped to launch the periodical Scrutiny in 1932. During the First World War he served with the Friends' Ambulance Unit as a stretcher-bearer on the western front, an experience which left him deeply troubled by insomnia.
