Jawaharlal Nehru

(1889-1964), First Prime Minister of India; son of Pandit Motilal Nehru

Sitter associated with 19 portraits
Nehru was home-schooled in British India in both Western and Indian education, before graduating from Trinity College, Cambridge and Inner Temple. He trained as a barrister before returning to India to practice law. He joined the Indian National Congress party (1919) becoming a close ally to Gandhi, though both had differing views on many issues. He was imprisoned by the British for nine years in the lead up to independence. When he was freed he found that the Muslim League headed by Muhammed Ali Jinnah, his old Congress colleague and now his opponent, had began dominating Muslim politics in India. Nehru and Jinnah were key players in the partition of 1947, culminating in the dissolution of the by now unpopular British Raj, the independence of India and the birth of Pakistan. His only daughter Indira Gandhi also served as Prime Minister of India.
