Artist of 244 portraits
Parkinson started his career as an apprentice with photographers Speaight & Son, before opening his first studio at 1, Dover Street off Piccadilly. During the 1930s his work appeared in Harper's Bazaar and The Bystander. From 1941 Parkinson began a long association with Vogue, where, with his wife, actress Wenda Rogerson, he made some of his most enduring fashion images. From 1960-4, as Associate Editor of Queen magazine, he photographed the leading personalities of the 60s, including Jean Shrimpton, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones. In 1981, the same year he was awarded a CBE, the National Portrait Gallery staged Parkinson's first major retrospective. Parkinson has donated over 200 prints to the collection.
