Edward ('Eddy') Sackville-West
(1901-1965), Writer and music criticEdward ('Eddy') Sackville-West, 5th Baron Sackville
Sitter associated with 39 portraits
His best-remembered fictional work is The Rescue: a Melodrama for Broadcasting (1943) for which Benjamin Britten produced a score. He contributed his first 'Gramophone Notes' to the New Statesman in 1935, and for the next twenty years he became one of the most respected music critics of his generation. In 1945 he bought a home in Dorset where, with the music critic Desmond Shawe-Taylor, the painter Eardley Knollys and the literary critic Raymond Mortimer, he established a male 'salon', entertaining friends from the worlds of books and music. It was there that Sackville-West and Shawe-Taylor compiled their famous Record Guide, first published in 1951.
