Noel Streatfeild
(1895-1986), Novelist and children's writer(Mary) Noel Streatfeild
Sitter in 17 portraits
Streatfeild's much-loved novel Ballet Shoes (1936), an unsentimental view of children working in the theatre, came out of her own experiences as a professional actress in the 1920s. It was the first of several career-oriented children's books including Tennis Shoes (1937) and White Boots (1951). She became, in her own words 'a national institution' in the world of children's books. In contrast, her adult fiction, Caroline England (1937) and The Winter is Past (1940), address illegitimacy, divorce, prostitution and homosexuality.
