Joe Tilson
(1928-2023), Painter, sculptor and printmakerSitter in 9 portraits
London-born artist who trained as a carpenter before studying at St Martin's and the Royal College of Art with Auerbach, Blake and Kossoff among his contemporaries. In 1955 he was awarded the Rome Prize and spent much of his time in Italy. Originally associated with the British Pop Art movement in the early 1960s, Tilson has achieved international acclaim over the last forty years for the originality of his paintings, constructions, reliefs, prints and multiples, whose sources are drawn from literature, philosophy, ethnography and alchemy.
