Sitter in 12 portraits
Wall began his career as a music hall entertainer, billed as 'Max Wall with his Independent Legs'. In the 1940s and 50s he enjoyed radio and television success, perfecting his dishevelled clown persona. He became particularly known as a radio comedian in the 1940s on Variety Bandbox, Midday Music-Hall and Variety Playhouse. After the decline of music hall, Wall performed in contemporary theatre, including the works of John Osborne and Samuel Beckett.
