Sir Huw Wheldon

(1916-1986), Broadcaster and administrator

Broadcaster and television executive; Huw Wheldon joined the BBC in 1952 as publicity officer, moving on to become a senior producer. He presented the children's programme All Your Own (1952-61) and conducted interviews for Panorama but became particularly associated with Monitor (1957-64), a Sunday night arts programme which he hosted from 1958-65. In 1965 Wheldon was appointed Controller of Programmes, in 1968 he became Managing Director of Television and in 1976 was appointed Deputy Director-General. He returned to presenting with Royal Heritage (1977), timed to coincide with Queen Elizabeth II's Jubilee in 1977. He was a Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery for ten years from 1976.

A water colour preliminary study of the Gordon Stuart portrait is owned by Mr Wynn Wheldon; a bust by sculptor Jonah Jones is kept at the Royal television Society; an oil portrait by William Thomson, RA, has been loaned to the BBC. A photograph of Huw Wheldon by Snowdon is owned by Mr Wynn Wheldon.
