Barrister, playwright and author; his plays have been staged since the 1950s, but reached a peak with the semi-autobiographical A Voyage Round My Father (1970). Televised novels include Paradise Postponed (1985) and Summer's Lease (1988). Best-known of his many television adaptations is the Rumpole of the Bailey series (first broadcast 1978).
