Molecular biologist; won Nobel Prize for Chemistry (jointly with Sir John Kendrew )1962, for work on the structure and function of proteins and nucleic acids; Professor of Physiology, Cambridge University, 1973-9. Joint winner, with John Kendrew, of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1962) for work on the structure of haemoglobin.
